Phonology

Phoneme

The smallest distinct unit of sound in a language that can distinguish one word from another.

Detailed Linguistic Background

English has approximately 44 distinct phonemes (including 20 vowel sounds and 24 consonant sounds), while its alphabet has only 26 letters. By contrast, many languages have significantly fewer vowel sounds (e.g., Spanish has only 5 vowels). When non-native speakers encounter English vowels (such as the difference between the short lax /ɪ/ in 'sit' and the tense long /iː/ in 'seat'), they often compress them into their native language's closest phonetic inventory. Understanding and producing target phonemes accurately is foundational for speech intelligibility.

How nthoughts Implements This Principle

Our pronunciation feedback engine evaluates phoneme-level acoustics during your conversations with Maya. If a key consonant cluster or vowel length is altered, the system highlights the exact phonetic segment and provides an immediate native audio playback for comparison.
